HOW TO CHANGE SSH PORT (QUICK)
Log into your VPS and copy and paste the code below. You can change the port number to something different
echo ‘Port 5678’ >> /etc/ssh/sshd_config && service sshd restart
HOW TO CHANGE SSH PORT (MANUALLY)
Now that you are connected to your VPS, the first thing you want to do is change the deafult SSH port.
Type nano /etc/ssh/sshd_config and press ENTER
Hit the down arrow key until you get to Port 22 (should be 4 times)
Hit the right arrow key 5 times (until the first 2 in 22 is highlighted)
Press the delete key twice
Type in another number. This will change the default port from 22 to something different. Use 8050 or 8080 8090.
(The reason for this is bots are automatically scanning and trying to brute force login into your server. By changing the default port, you just remove any chances from them trying that.)
Then press Crtl and O. and press ENTER. This will save the file.
Then press Crtl and X This will exit nano and back to the terminal
Type service sshd restart This will restart SSH service. Now be sure to update the port in Bitvise from 22 to the number you set it too, and then click on Save profile. This will drastically reduce the bots from trying to brute force login your server.
